WHAT EVERY JUNIOR SHOULD KNOW ABOUT JUDO

Been practicing judo for a while? Doing well at local and regional tournaments? Practicing a lot? Cross training as much as you can and working on your physical conditioning religiously? Do you have a very supportive family, a great coach who would do anything for you, and every opportunity to become a world class judoka? You certainly are putting in the time and the effort. Why are you not winning? Perhaps you need to explore the idea of self analysis. Your family and your coach can only do so much, but winning at the national and international level has to come from within. SELF COACH After you finish your matches, but before you talk to your coach, spend a few minutes by yourself. Analyze your match in a positive manner. What did you do well? Where did things go wrong? What would you have done differently if you had the fight the same opponent again? Self analysis will help you to grow and mature as a judo player and once you get the hang of it, it will make you a lot better. Please note that even top players often tear themselves down after a tough loss. Constructively review your match and keep track of what you did that was successful and was not successful. LEARN FROM YOUR PEERS Instead of packing up your bags and leaving right after your matches, hang around and see what you can learn from the other matches. Watch the other players, try to analyze their mistakes, learn from their good techniques, and at the same time, scout the talent. Who knows, you might have to fight them in the next tournament. LEARN FROM WATCHING SENIOR PLAYERS Most senior players might not be able to move as fast as you do, but they are masters at fighting intelligently. It would certainly be to your advantage to learn some good old fashioned strategy, gripping, and set ups from an experienced player. Ask a veteran judoka to be your mentor and learn all of the “street smarts” of judo that they are willing to share. SELF-EDUCATE When was the last time you read a judo book? Having a coach is great, but if you want to become a world class judoka, you need to hit the books and video tapes as well. Knowing the ABC¹s of judo is crucial to attaining your next level. This especially applies to the evolving rules of judo. STOP THE TRASH TALK Never underestimate your opponent. Treat them with respect and dignity. Develop a “do it with your technique and not your mouth” attitude and show everybody that you are a real champion. Keep in mind that trash talking may actually push your opponent to fight harder. The intimidation you are trying to accomplish may actually backfire.

DON¹T SHOW YOUR ANGER ON THE MAT Learn how to control your emotions. Throwing temper tantrums is not going to hurt anybody but yourself. Throwing belts and swearing will not only get you down, but could elevate your opponent¹s confidence. Negativity can be very distracting to yourself and those cheering for you. DEVELOP “A MIND OVER MATTER” PHILOSPPHY There is a big difference between pain and a real injury. Most every judoka at the national and international level has some minor nagging injury that causes some irritable pain. The sooner that you accept the fact that you will not always play at 100%, the quicker you will be come a better fighter. Anyone can win when they feel great and are in top form, but only the toughest competitors prevail when they are struggling and are not at their best. DON’T OVER TRAIN A week before your scheduled event, reduce your practice load by 25%. Relax, you will still be well prepared for your tournament, but you will also be well rested, enthusiastic and hungry to win all your matches. BECOME A TEAM PLAYER Forget about the “me first” attitude. Always put the needs of the club first. Listen to your coaches, get along with your teammates and, above all else, show the class associated with being a team member. This type of behavior will earn respect from coaches, peers, and the community. Perhaps, you might end up winning the world championship, but even if you don¹t, you will still be on top as a role model, great judoka and a life long winner in the eyes of all others.
